I’ve spent around 10 years working in Big Tech and startups. I won’t claim to be the preeminent expert in building products, but I believe I can be a unique voice in the sea of tech blogs, newsletters, and podcasts. You see, I think the biggest thing I can bring to the table is to deeply understand the user or customer. And then take that deep understanding and marry it with business value.
Early in my career, I was pretty naive. I only wanted to work on products 100% focused on delivering user value. I quickly learned; however, that if you can’t build a business around a product, that the product will be dead upon arrival. Just look at some classic examples: YikYak, MoviePass, and Vine.
I learned I can’t be so user-centric that the business doesn’t make money. Now, this doesn’t mean using dark patterns or trickery to continuously charge a customer's credit card. Building truly great products couldn’t be further from that.
